DescriptionLarge jar. Underglaze blue-green, brown and yellow decoration showing fruit and two medallions (a woman's head and St. Francis of Assisi), unglazed mouth and foot. Ex. Collection R. von Kaufmann, Berlin, #713 E.L. Garbaty Coll. Neck is broken in five pieces and has been mended. Description sent by Mr. Garbaty's secretary: Majolica vase, Venetian ca. 1600, 15"H, pyriform, w/short cylindrical neck, bold pattern of fruit laden branches and flowers on white ground, on two sides enclosed in a large voluted flower; medallions, one with the figure of St. Francis, on the other side-the head of a lady (perhaps a portrait of the donor), the style of the figures indicates a Venetian artist, colors: yellow ochre, brown, blue, green, and violet on a white ground, smaller scale floral arabesque in the same pattern ornament the neck and foot.
