DescriptionWilliam Edwin Jones pushes daughter Renee Andrewnetta Jones during protest march on Main Street, Memphis, TN.Label TextErnest C. Withers American, 1922−2007 Daddy, I Want to Be Free Too, Memphis, Tennessee, August 1961 Gelatin silver print (photograph), printed 1996 William Edwin Jones pushes a stroller holding his eight-month-old daughter Renée Andrewnetta Jones during a 1961 protest march on Main Street in Memphis, Tennessee. Organizers of this rally called for only fathers and daughters to march, asking that mothers and sons stay home. They anticipated that a mixed gender demonstration, including young girls, might be less likely to experience police or mob disruption, and if violence occurred, at least part of each family would be safe.
