Withers American, 1922−2007 Marchers on Main Street after the Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Memphis, Tennessee, 1968 Gelatin silver print (photograph), printed 1996 On April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot and killed on the balcony of his room at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. His murder sparked riots and protests around the nation, including this march through downtown Memphis on April 8. These protestors carry signs expressing their grief, as well as their support of an ongoing strike by local sanitation workers in response to unequal pay and working conditions.
