Label TextTimothy H. O’Sullivan American, 1840−1882 Field Where General Reynolds Fell, Gettysburg, 1863 From Gardner’s Photographic Sketch Book of the War Published by Philp & Solomons, Washington, D.C., 1866 Albumen print (photograph) In early July 1863, Alexander Gardner, Mathew Brady, and other professional photographers hurried to Gettysburg, Pa., within days of the conclusion of fighting. Gardner’s assistant Timothy O’Sullivan captured many gruesome shots of the corpses still present on the battlefield. Describing this image, Gardner later wrote, “The picture represents only a single spot on the long line of killed.” President Lincoln probably saw this photograph on display in Gardner’s studio when he went to sit for his portrait in November 1863, just before traveling to Gettysburg and delivering his most famous speech.
