Label TextMother with Three Daughters, ca. 1845 American Oil on canvas Aside from a charming representation of an unknown family, this portrait serves as an exemplar of the ideals of feminine virtue which governed both the public and private lives of women of the middle and upper classes during the early nineteenth century. The mother presides over her home, while her three daughters exhibit attributes—a book, bouquet, and doll—of their training in activities which were frequently associated with women of their social class.
