DescriptionThis is an albumen carte de visite.Label Textleft Abraham Lincoln, 1861 American Albumen print (photograph) right Francis Hacker American, born ca. 1828 Early Home of Lincoln, 1865 Albumen print (photograph) Responding to public demand, many photographers printed images of the president and places associated with his life. Inexpensive carte-de-visite prints like those seen here were the most common. The portrait on the left was well known during Lincoln’s presidency and became the basis for many political cartoons. The card on the right shows a rough wooden cabin, purportedly one of Lincoln’s childhood homes in rural Kentucky or Indiana. After his death, such images helped mythologize Lincoln as a great leader of humble origins. Gift of David L. Hack and Museum purchase, with funds from Walter P.
