DescriptionA cloudy landscape. Tall trees on each side of a dirt road. White houses in the background.Label TextGeorge Elmer Browne American, 1871–1946 Lowery Day, Normandy, 1913 Watercolor on paper George Elmer Browne’s blustery depiction of a rural road in France demonstrates a number of interesting watercolor techniques. The sky shows evidence of blotting, in which a cloth or sponge soaks the wet color from the paper, softening its appearance. At the left, Browne has used a tool to rub or scrape away the paint, revealing dashes of white paper beneath and accentuating the mottled effect of light through the trees. Gift of Walter P.
