By radically synthesizing a variety of formal influences—from African masks to the paintings of Paul Cézanne—in a single work, the painting brought Picasso to the threshold of Cubism. Here, the artist depicts a figure with its hands posed behind its head. The blunt, mask-like face and bold, thick contours anticipate the raw power of a finished female form. Gift of Walter P.
