Levinson American, 1944–2001 Untitled (Red Boat), 1983 Chromogenic print (photograph) The low, hazy horizon in this photograph leaves only a sliver of landscape beneath the broad stretch of sky. By carefully composing this image, Newport News-based photographer David Levinson transformed a familiar Tidewater scene into a captivating arrangement of forms and colors. Scrubby trees silhouetted against the blue-gray sky spring from a rise of brilliant green grass while an enormous red ship moves along the water. Even though Levinson created an abstract composition, he did not disconnect it from reality. The lone red vessel serves as a link between our region’s specific landscape and the vast geography of the world.
