Diann Rolfe Fiery’s paired photographs dramatize the delicate balance between the natural and the manmade near her western Virginia home. A summer scene shows an inviting pool on a sunny day as bright light glints off a fence and power lines—two symbols of human comfort and control. In a winter scene, cattle graze in the distance while the pool, now frozen over, is dotted by animal tracks. The pair cleverly questions where nature ends and civilization begins, showing the grand drama of the seasons as they play out on a well-kept lawn.
