Label TextT. R. Burnham American General Ulysses S. Grant, Washington, D.C., June 5, 1868 Albumen print Gift of David L. Hack and by exchange Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. 98.32.303 These two images of General and later President Grant were taken four years apart. Mathew Brady's portrait was made just before Grant was appointed General-in-Chief commanding the Union forces in the Civil War. T. R. Burnham's portrait shows Grant on the eve of his election as President. Through pose and expression the photographers have captured very different views of Grant: one, a weary and preoccupied general in the midst of a bloody campaign, the other, an emerging and confident politician.Exhibition History"At the Front," Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Va., August 14, 2009 - January 17, 2010.
