Photo shows the upper half of the head of a dark-haired woman, whose face is partially obscured by a patterned veil of foliate lace designs. The identity of the subject/model in this photo is unknown (possibly a costumed actress).Label TextLotte Jacobi American, 1896–1990 Woman with Veil, ca. 1935 Platinum print (photograph) Photographer Lotte Jacobi’s model gazes out in a way that is both confrontational and evasive. Blurred tones, abrupt cropping, and unusual framing add a dramatic edge and psychological intensity to the typical headshot. Jacobi created this image in the 1930s while she was living in Berlin, Germany, where she became known for theatrical photographs of actors and dancers. Jacobi immigrated to the United States in 1935; unfortunately many of the works she produced in Germany did not come with her.
