Label TextWilliam Morris Smith American, active 1860s and Alexander Gardner American, 1821−1882 Dedication of Monument on Bull Run Battle-Field, 1865 From Gardner’s Photographic Sketch Book of the War Published by Philp & Solomons, Washington, D.C., 1866 Albumen print (photograph) Gardner’s Photographic Sketch Book of the War concludes with this picture of dignitaries gathered at the Bull Run, Va., battlefield on June 10, 1865. They dedicate a monument to some of the first casualties of the Civil War, bringing closure both to that sad chapter in history and to Alexander Gardner’s photographic project. President Andrew Johnson stands in profile at the center, just to the left of a woman in a wide hoop skirt. He and several others appear to wear small ribbons or corsages on their left sleeves, mourning the soldiers killed at Bull Run and Lincoln’s recent assassination.
