Label TextWilliam Eggleston American (b. 1931) Sumner, Mississippi, ca. 1972 Dye transfer print Purchase and National Endowment for the Arts Grant 89.88 ~ Working exclusively in color, William Eggleston first gained renown in 1976 when his work was the subject of a solo exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art. In the book published to accompany the exhibition, John Szarkowski, former Director of Photography at MoMA, wrote, "the best photography of today is related in iconography and technique to the contemporary standard of vernacular camera work [the snapshot], which is in fact often rich and surprising. The difference between the two is a matter of intelligence, imagination, intensity, precision, and coherence." Exhibition History"The Portrait in America," The Alice R. and Sol B.
