DescriptionOne of a pair of Federal period sideboards, each with six square tapered legs and a top surmounted by a shaped gallery ornamented with book-matched crotch mahogany veneer. The projecting D-shaped central section of the sideboard consists of a single wide drawer above two doors. Flanking flat-front side sections consist of single narrow drawers above single doors. Edges of doors, drawers, top and gallery are outlined with dark wood stringing (approx. 3/32" wide), possibly dyed light-colored hardwood rather than ebony. A 1/4" band of light-colored mahogany spans the lower edge of the carcase and the upper legs. Drawer pulls have brass bails and cast copper oval backplates ornamented with a cornucopia motif, with the exception of the pull on the proper right drawer, which has a thin stamped brass back plate with the same cornucopia design. Copper oval pulls ornamented with crouching lions are centered on each side section door. Inlaid dark tropical hardwood lozenges surround door and drawer keyholes.
