DescriptionThis bronze pottery vase is a lamp base. This vase is a tall baluster-shaped container which has had bronze applied to a ceramic form with designs of rambling vines of possibly roses. There are several peacocks around the vase in relief as are the vines. The lower section has fluting in relief and the neck has a separate collar applied to strengthen it.

Label TextTiffany Studios Corona, New York (1902-1938) Favrile Vase, ca. 1910 Semiporcelain and bronze Museum Purchase 94.18.1 The ever inventive and experimental Louis Comfort Tiffany was not the first person to cover pottery with metal. The process had already been perfected at Clewel Potters in Ohio and in several other places. This vase, however, is the largest metal-covered pottery object known to have been produced by Tiffany, which makes it extremely rare. Several smaller examples are in collections throughout this country, although he made relatively few. It is interesting that the object was discovered in North Carolina by the Museum's curator of decorative arts while he was looking for native potters' work. Though the Museum's holdings of Tiffany material are extraordinary by any measure, this unique object was an extremely prudent addition to that collection.
