Label TextAndré Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri French, 1819–1889 Jules Ortégat, 1862 Albumen print from collodion negative André Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri founded a studio in Paris and in 1854 patented the carte de visite, a small-format print made with a sliding plateholder and a four-lens camera that registered eight exposures on a single glass negative. Uncut, glossy prints like this one were studio records, allowing clients to order the poses they liked. The Instagram of their time, these portraits appealed to urban fashionistas, celebrities, and their imitators. In this example, the Belgian jockey Jules Ortégat dons his street clothes, adds a jockey cap, and pretends to whip his steed to victory. Museum purchase, in memory of Alice R. and Sol. B.
