Label TextAdrien Tournachon [Nadar jeune] French, 1825–1903 Voigtland bull aged 48 months, raised by M. Jules Forster, from Bergen (Saxony), 3rd prize in the category of Voigtland, 1856 Gelatin-coated salted paper print from collodion negative Sent by his older brother, Félix, to study with Gustave Le Gray, Adrien was the first Tournachon to make portraits in 1853.In June 1856 he was hired to record the winners of the first state-fundedinternational agricultural fair, held near the Champs-Élysées. Posing a massive German bull before an improvised drape, he further flattened the animal by retouching its contours and even erasing legs. The swarthy worker immobilizing the head wasan insignificant prop, overshadowed by the expensive male stud that French farmers might purchase to improve their stock. Museum purchase, in memory of Alice R. and Sol B. Frank 2016.35.1 ProvenanceThe work was chosen from the inventory of Serge Kakou in September 2016, when it was sent to the Museum for review. After consideration by curator Seth Feman, chief curator Lloyd DeWitt, and director Erik Neil, the photograph was held on consignment. It was purchased by the museum in December 2016.Exhibition History"New Frames of Reference: Early French Photographers at Home and Abroad," Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Va, gallery 228, September 5, 2024 - February 16, 2025.
