Label TextLinnaeus Tripe English (1822-1902) Temple in Burma, 1855 Salted-paper print from waxed-paper negative Purchase, Horace W. Goldsmith Endowment and Art Purchase Funds 93.31.2 Prior to being hired to photograph antiquities by the British East India Company in 1855, Captain Linnaeus Tripe was photographer to the British mission at the court of Ava in Burma. For 26 days he battled unfavorable working conditions and weather to produce a series of Burmese views published for the Madras Photographic Society in 1857. These images, as well as a group of stereoscopic views taken in 1858, reveal Tripe's interest in picturesque representations of monuments in natural settings.
