Teynard was interested in capturing the patterns created by the contrasts of light and shadow, and his photographs display a unique balance of information and design. Originally issued beginning in 1853 Teynard's salted paper prints were published in two volumes under the title Égypte et Nubie: Sites et monuments (1858), a travel album considered to be one of the masterpieces of 19th-century photography.
