Label TextAntoine-Louis Barye French, 1796–1875 Panther Attacking a Stag, modeled 1836, cast ca. 1876 Bronze cast by F. Barbedienne, Paris Antoine-Louis Barye’s dynamic animal sculptures and his focus on violent struggle reflect the Romantic fascination with animals as symbols of nature’s wildness and brute force. His bronzes proved especially popular with emerging middle-class collectors, and their appeal continued after his death in 1875. Look for the foundry mark near the panther’s tail that reads “COLLECTION F. BARBEDIENNE PARIS.” The foundry bought Barye’s sculptural models and the rights to reproduce them after his death, indicating this is a posthumous casting. Gift of Walter P.
