Label TextNancy Camden Witt American, 1930-2009 Echoes, 1968 Mixed media on canvas Known more for her hyper-realistic paintings from the 1980s forward, Nancy Camden Witt spent the 1960s working predominately in sculpture before she shifted to the medium of painting. Echoes represents this earlier period in Witt’s practice, which has not received much attention. The artist’s sculptural works were canvas-covered “constructions,” similar to the piece here. The monotone, circular work resembles a shield with twine in a figure-8 shape at the center. The title suggests the idea of motion—when sound reverberates, it does so in a circular manner.
