Label TextAttributed to Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. American, 1826–1888 Lamp, ca. 1829–35 Blown and pressed glass Like the “air-built castle” in Thomas Cole’s Youth, this glass oil lamp takes us on an imaginative journey with its blend of classical and exotic architectural elements. The lamp features pillars, bouquets, and lions, all crowned by a giant spherical dome, while Cole’s painted temple is an even more elaborate confection of statues, columns, and arcades. Cole visited grand domed buildings during his travels to Italy and may have studied illustrated architectural treatises in his patrons’ libraries. Similar sources inspired the designers of glass and other decorative household objects in the 1830s. Gift of Walter P.
