Label TextIlya Bolotowsky American, b. Russia, 1907–1981 Neo-Plastic Column #86, ca. 1965 Painted wood Ilya Bolotowsky was one of a number of American artists who, beginning in the mid-1930s, responded to the influence of European movements devoted to geometric forms and the abstract play of primary colors against black and white. Here he creates a column with no clear front or back, so that equal compositional interest is sustained from every vantage point. Each surface of the square column is painted with a different pattern of yellow, blue, black, and white rectangles. Thus, each of the four sides reads as a complete and independent composition.
