Born in South Carolina of Greek immigrant parents, Manos was photographing for local newspapers by age 14. In 1953, at the age of 19, Manos became official photographer for the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the Tanglewood Music Festival. He became a member of the Magnum photo agency in 1963. During the 1980s, Manos turned increasingly to color photography, particularly of American subjects. These collage-like compositions deal with contemporary themes and were compiled in his book, entitled, American Color, published by W.W. Norton in 1995. This photograph was the cover image for that book and was published in conjunction with an exhibition organized by the Chrysler Museum. In June 2003, Manos won the Leica Medal of Excellence Award for his American Color work. Five of his photographs are included in the Chrysler collection.
