Before her are writing tools: ink and a box with a shallow ceramic dish to hold it, a stone for dissolving a stick of ink, and a brush. The vertical lines of calligraphy in elegant cursive behind her appear written on the wall without a scroll to hold them there. Both paintings and prints typically combined beautiful poetry with pictures of graceful subjects without regard for the illusion of space. Toulouse-Lautrec applied this same freedom to many of his works, most notably some of the theater programs. Gift of Dr. James C.
