Label TextCharles Bierstadt American, 1819–1903 Horseshoe Falls, from Canadian Side, 1870s Albumen prints (photographs) mounted on card Look into this handheld stereoviewer for a favorite way of experiencing the American landscape in the 1800s. Each inexpensive stereocard features two, almost identical photographic prints mounted side by side. When viewed through a special device, the pictures blend, creating the illusion of three-dimensionality and depth. Charles Bierstadt opened a commercial photography studio in Niagara Falls in response to the high demand for images of this magnificent site. Works by his artistic brothers—the painter Albert and fellow photographer Edward—can be seen nearby. Gift of Robert W.
