A Parisian jeweler who had designed small objects in a variety of media, Brateau came to glass late in life, first showing pâte de verre at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1910. His work in pâte de verre is small-scaled, delicate and sweet, reflecting his jeweler's sensibilities. Brateau is one of the rarest makers of pâte de verre and is represented by only one other object in the Chrysler's glass collection.
