Label TextBenny Andrews American, 1930-2006 Woman, after 1960 Mixed media Benny Andrews left a legacy of highly dynamic works focused on African American daily life. Many of his images relate to his childhood experiences and family friends in rural Georgia. His art repeatedly depicts men and women working in agricultural jobs, surrounded by family, or engaging in everyday activities. As a child, he worked with his family picking cotton, but his mother encouraged him to get his education to combat the poverty that surrounded him. Woman is not a depiction of the artist’s mother, but it is clear women were influential in his professional and personal life. Gift of Walter P.
