Label TextSir Edward Coley Burne-Jones English (1833-1898) Envy, ca. 1873 Watercolor heightened with white on paper mounted on panel Gift of Arnie and Neva Hecht 96.19 In the early 1870s the Pre-Raphaelite artist Burne-Jones was commissioned by Morris & Co. to design a stained glass window in the west tower of St. Chad's church in Rochdale. Completed on January 1, 1873, Burne-Jones' design featured female personifications of the Virtues and Vices, with each Vice figure shown crouching beneath the feet of a triumphant Virtue. Formerly owned by the dukes of Wellington, this striking watercolor depiction of the Vice of Envy is one of Burne-Jones' full-scale preliminary drawings, or cartoons, for the St. Chad's window design. In the finished window Envy crouches together with another Vice, Folly, beneath the figure of Charity. This generous gift marks a significant addition to the Museum's small collection of Pre-Raphaelite drawings.
