Engl 97.17.1 One of the world's best known advocates of non-violent change, Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929. He was the grandson of the Rev. A. D. Williams, who was pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church and a founder of Atlanta's NAACP chapter. Martin Luther King, Jr., was baptized as a child in Ebenezer Baptist Church. After giving a trial sermon to the Ebenezer congregation at the age of 19, he was ordained as a minister. In 1960, Martin Luther King, Jr., became a co-pastor of Ebenezer with his father. As a student at Morehouse College, in Atlanta, at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania, and Boston University, King deepened his understanding of theological scholarship and Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent strategy of social change.
