DescriptionThis open armchair is of walnut and walnut burl featuring virtuoso carving throughout. The handrests are fashioned from winged herons perched atop leaves, reeds and cattails; the crest is exquisitely cared with central bearded head with ribbons and swags descending from the mouth and tied up at the corners with pierced carved bows which trail down the sides. Similar beribboned swag beneath the front apron, turned legs terminating in brass castors, @-shaped stretcher with small central finial. The chair is upholstered in green silk damask over the original underlayment. The original upholster is not known.Published ReferencesJeff Harrison, _Collecting with Vision: Treasures From the Chrysler Museum of Art_ (London: D. Giles Ltd., 2007), 154, fig. 197.
