DescriptionWinter scene of pines and a pond at sunset in rose, mauve, and white, contemporary wood frame.Label TextEdward Timothy Hurley American, 1869–1950 Winter Sunset, 1905 Glazed ceramic pottery by Rookwood Pottery Company, Cincinnati, Ohio In addition to ceramic vessels, Rookwood Pottery Company produced painted ceramic plaques, framed in oak and marketed as small landscape paintings. As seen in these examples, the plaques often presented quiet landscape images inspired by the forest and hills typical of the region around Cincinnati, Ohio, where Rookwood was based. Their soft, muted colors and even lighting follow the Tonalist painting style of George Inness, whose Home at Montclair hangs nearby. Rookwood’s translucent “Vellum” glaze, developed in 1904, adds an atmospheric haziness to these dreamy, impressionistic scenes. Chrysler Museum of Art, Gift of Phillip C.
