DescriptionBlown, colorless, bucket-bowl rummer on solid button stem and plain round foot, polished pontil. Engraved scene of iron bridge over River Wear, which opened in 1796, showing a two-masted ship sailing under bridge. Reverse engraving: rectangular medallion topped with basket of flowers and spray of flowers around bottom. These commemorative goblets made for about 50 years (1796-1840). Bridge was largest single span built in Britain at that time.

Inscriptions: on the obverse SUNDERLAND BRIDGE on the reverse, the monogram CEW Gift of Kathryn K Porter 87.424 At its completion in 1796, Sunderland Bridge (over the River Wear) was the longest single span iron bridge in the world. The 18th Century engineering marvel was clebrated in glass and ceramics well into the 19th century.
