The Museum's interest in North Carolina pottery was spearheaded by its curator of decorative arts as he studied the Southern pottery already in the collection. The curator subsequently made several trips to the pottery-making areas of North Carolina and, as a result of those excursions, acquired a number of works for the Museum. The curator's study of North Carolina potters and other Southern potters has led to significant additions to the Museum's pottery collection and resulted in two exhibitions of this material at the Museum. The exhibitions in turn have fostered local interest in the material, resulting in the formation of several fine private collections.
