Emmet Gowin's extended series of introspective, ethereal portraits of his wife and children provides an intimate, yet public view of private experiences. Having studied with Harry Callahan at the Rhode Island School of Design in the mid-1960s, Gowin proceeded to employ wide-angle lenses and expressive prints to dramatically enhance straight photographic descriptions of his subjects. A native of Virginia, Gowin's first important photographs were made in Danville. In addition to his black-and-white family work, Gowin has also explored color imagery with Polaroid films and has worked extensively with the landscape.
The Chrysler collection includes five Gowin photographs. In cooperation with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Chrysler organized a small traveling Gowin exhibition in 1992.
