DescriptionThis is a gaslight print photograph.Label TextMargaret Watkins Canadian (b. Hamilton, Ontario, 1884-1969) Milk Bottle, 1919 Silver chloride print Horace W. Goldsmith Fund 84.77 At the age of 30, Margaret Watkins began to study photography under Clarence H. White. She became so proficient that in 1916 she began teaching at White's school of photography in New York City. Paul Outerbridge, Jr., also included in this exhibition, was among her many students. In the 1920s, she became one of the first women to be employed by a major advertising firm. Among her clients was Macy's department store. At the same time, her work was exhibited widely including London, Paris, San Francisco, Japan, and Java. In 1923, she had her first solo exhibition at New York's Art Center under the auspices of the Pictorial Photographers of America. A review in the December 1923 Zontian magazine, published by and for professional women, stated: "Her choices of subject is as wide as her exhibition opportunities have been far, from a milk bottle to a landscape. Miss Watkins uses the simplest things to distinguished compositional advantage."
