DescriptionThis photograph is an albumen print that depicts a woman in a garden, likely inspired by Tennyson's poem by the same name.Label TextJulia Margaret Cameron English, 1815–1879 The Gardener's Daughter (portrait of Mary Ryan), 1865 Albumen print (photograph) from a glass negative This work is based on the Alfred Tennyson poem “The Gardener’s Daughter.” The poem describes a young man who is awestruck when he sees a beautiful woman in a garden. The woman is unaware of being observed while the man falls in love. When Julia Margaret Cameron took up photography in 1863, the leaders of the male-dominated British photographic societies looked down on her. She produced theatrical pictures that gave her sitters a bold, penetrating presence and evoke moody, dream-like fantasy. Museum purchase, in memory of Alice R. and Sol B.
