Label TextMaster of the Coronation of the Virgin of Biella Italian, active 1515–1545 Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata, ca. 1540 Oil on wood Golden rays stream from a miraculous vision of Christ on the cross, piercing Saint Francis. They mark his hands, feet, and side with the five wounds—or stigmata—suffered by Christ during his crucifixion. Embracing the harmony and composure of High Renaissance design, the artist envisioned the scene as a serene moment of divine grace. The haloed saint looks grateful as he receives his heavenly gift.
