DescriptionThis is a bronze candle holder for a single candle. The lower portion is shaped like a bird's claw. It is very realistic, and four sharp talons balance the whole piece.

Label TextSevero da Ravenna Italian, active 1496–1525 Candlestick on Claw Foot, 1500s Bronze Renaissance sculptors often made small bronzes with interchangeable parts that could be combined to fulfill a specific patron’s wish. This candlestick’s claw-foot base unscrews from the stem to serve as a mount for other objects such as oil lamps or perfume burners. Gift of Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. 77.1259.6
