Label TextGeorge A. Tice American (b. 1938) From the Chrysler Building, New York, 1978 Gelatin-silver print Museum Purchase 86.203 A self-taught photographer, George Tice is largely responsible for the revival of the platinum printing process. Tice mostly works with the extended photo-essay to capture the American urban landscape. Considering himself as "primarily a photographer of place," this image from the 61st floor of the Chrysler building was made on commission for the Association for a Better New York. In this work, Tice intended to allude to a 1934 photograph, taken by Margaret Bourke-White, of a gargoyle perched atop this building overlooking Manhattan.Exhibition History"History of Photography," Alice R. and Sol B.
