Label TextGeorge A. Tice American, b. 1938 High School Yearbook, Dixon Public Library, 1987 Gelatin silver print (photograph) Do you recognize the young man depicted in the upper right corner of this yearbook? Identified by the nickname “Dutch,” the ambitious high schooler would go on to a career in Hollywood before becoming president of the United States in 1981 (note the yearbook misspells his name as “Donald”). The photographer George Tice visited Dixon, Illinois, in hopes of understanding how Ronald Reagan’s hometown propelled him from ordinary beginnings to political and celebrity fame. As seen in this straightforward shot of a yearbook, he found that the clichéd wholesomeness of Midwestern life only raised more questions about how someone could rise from modest roots to change the course of history.
