Label TextGeorges de la Tour French, 1593–1652 Saint Philip, ca. 1625 Oil on canvas In some collecting areas, Chrysler sought out the advice of experts such as Bertina Suida Manning and her father, Wilhelm Suida. They helped him assemble an exceptional group of French and Italian Baroque paintings, including this rare canvas by Georges de la Tour. De la Tour shows the Christian apostle Saint Phillip as a rough-hewn and humble peasant and captures the startling refractions of light in the simple glass buttons on his coarse tunic. This work was part of a cycle of all twelve apostles that was eventually installed in a church in Albi in the South of France before being dispersed among many museums. Gift of Walter P.
