Label TextAfter Jacques Bousseau French (1680-1740) Soldier Bending His Bow, late 18th century Bronze Museum purchase 69.34.1 The Parisian sculptor Bousseau was made a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1715. His reception piece, submitted to the Academy as a requirement for membership, was a marble sculpture of a Soldier Bending a Bow, a work found today in the Louvre, Paris. An impressive example of the French Baroque style, Bousseau's animated and robust male figure proved popular, and in the decades that followed a number of bronze reductions were cast, including the present work. The subject has also been interpreted as "Ulysses Tightening his Bow." Exhibition History"The French Bronze 1500-1800," M.
