His reception piece, submitted to the Academy as a requirement for membership, was a marble sculpture of a Soldier Bending a Bow, a work found today in the Louvre, Paris. An impressive example of the French Baroque style, Bousseau's animated and robust male figure proved popular, and in the decades that followed a number of bronze reductions were cast, including the present work. The subject has also been interpreted as "Ulysses Tightening his Bow." Exhibition History"The French Bronze 1500-1800," M.
