Label TextJacques Lipchitz French, b. Lithuania, 1891–1973 Seated Figure, 1916 Bronze Jacques Lipchitz settled in Paris in 1909 and joined the avant-garde centered around Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. For the next decade, he produced severely geometric sculptures like this bronze statue. Although the figure’s head and eyes can be located easily, the rest of the seated figure is reduced to an austere bundle of vertical shafts fused together with flat planes and simple shapes—resulting in a work that is striking both for its monumentality and sense of dignity.
