DescriptionAbstract watercolor on paintingLabel TextNorman Bluhm American, 1921-1999 Untitled, 1957 Watercolor on paper Norman Bluhm was a highly gestural action painter, similar to contemporaries like Jackson Pollock; however, he was not as well known. His piece Untitled is firmly rooted in Abstract Expressionism, as the short circular and angular brushstrokes are visible. The piece contains mostly dark blues and greens, with splashes of bright reds and yellows along the edges. The color combination produces a moody effect, yet combined with the incredible scale, the work generates a sense of visual wonder. In using watercolor, Bluhm was able to saturate the canvas and mix the colors together to produce a tie-dye effect. Despite the beauty of his work, the artist has only recently begun to receive the recognition his immense, dynamic paintings deserve. Gift of Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. 71.837
