Label TextNorman Bluhm American, 1921–1999 Rouge, 1954 Oil on canvas Though less well known than Jackson Pollock and other contemporaries, Norman Bluhm was a highly gestural action painter. His Rouge is firmly rooted in Abstraction Expressionism, as the circular and angular brushstrokes are visible. The painting contains mostly bright reds with splashes of yellows and blues along the edges. The color combination is dynamic, and the various strokes create a visual wonder. Despite the beauty of his work, the artist has only recently begun to receive the wider recognition his immense, dynamic paintings deserve. Gift of Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. 71.2161
