Label TextUtagawa Hiroshige Japanese, 1797-1858 Shono: Driving Rain, 45th Station, Gift of Ms. Clara Neely 52.15.96 Selections from 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō Road, 1833-1834 Woodblock prints on paper Utagawa Hiroshige first traveled the Tōkaidō Road in 1832 as part of the procesion of the Bakufu magistrate, where the shôgunate was located, to the capital Kyoto, home of the emperor and his court. He published 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō Road the next year. His series focused not on the beauty spots, but on the experience of the journey, mapping the exhilarating peaks along with the miserable valleys found along the procession. The Chrysler Museum is fortunate to have the entire Tōkaidō series still pasted in its album.
