Label TextCornelia A. Dill-Lee, 1847 American Oil on canvas mounted on panel This commanding depiction of a young woman outfitted in her finest riding gear likely served as a wedding portrait of Cornelia Adeline Dill, who was married in Camillus, New York on May 5, 1847. During the early nineteenth century, artists rarely featured women in equestrian portraits, usually reserving such subjects for male military and political leaders. Here, however, the artist has portrayed the sitter as an accomplished horsewoman, calmly in control of her rearing steed.
