Uelsmann American, b. 1934 Untitled, 1982 Gelatin silver print (photograph) The outside comes inside in Jerry Uelsmann’s surrealist vision of a Victorian reading room overgrown with ivy. An open book at the secretary and an inviting chaise lounge suggest ways of entering his dreamlike world while the resting face superimposed onto a globe may symbolize the reaches of one’s imagination. Uelsmann explores the relationship between natural and manmade worlds by combining negatives in a darkroom. He photographs widely, with no preconceived ideas about his final images, and then looks for connections where natural and human subjects come into dialogue, as seen here in the patterning of the rug and the ivy.
